The book works the same way. Think First opens with a Find Your Problem index, a list of situations that sends you straight to the page you need, instead of asking you to read from the beginning.
Nobody Teaches You How to Learn
Universities teach content. Very few courses teach students how to plan their learning, check whether they actually understand, change strategy when something isn’t working, or decide when AI helps and when it quietly does the learning for them.
Capable students can struggle partly for this reason. Sometimes the missing piece is not ability or effort, but a practical system for directing their learning.
Seven Moves
Most academic tasks, from a problem set to a term paper, go better when you run this learning cycle. Each move is one question.
- Understand: What is this task asking me to learn or do?
- Plan: What strategy will I use?
- Practice First: What will I try before support or AI?
- Monitor: Do I understand?
- Adjust: What should I change now?
- Verify: Can I trust and stand behind this?
- Transfer: What will I carry forward next time?
Many quick checks take only a few minutes. The fuller tools give you more support when a task deserves it. The point is not to study longer. The point is to make the studying you already do count for more.
Two of the seven moves are especially important in the age of AI: Monitor and Verify. Monitor asks whether you understand. Verify asks whether you can stand behind what you are about to hand in. With AI, you can produce an assignment that reads well and still not understand it. A learning system has to be able to tell those two things apart.
The goal is not simply to use AI. The goal is to become a better learner in a world where AI exists.
Not a Book of Worksheets. A Learning System.
Every tool in Think First puts one or more of the seven moves into a usable form. A tool is never just a worksheet to fill in. Each one teaches you to make a better learning decision: understand the task, plan a strategy, try it yourself first, check whether you actually understand, adjust, verify you can stand behind the work, and carry one lesson into the next task.
The same seven moves run through assignments, exams, AI use, feedback, weekly planning, and recovery. Different pages, same system. The questions repeat on purpose, because they are meant to become the way you think.

Why This Works
None of this was invented for a website. The Learning Ownership System is a practical synthesis of decades of research on self-regulated learning, metacognition, effective study, feedback, and motivation.
- Testing yourself beats rereading. Trying to pull information from memory builds stronger recall than simply reading it again. (Roediger and Karpicke)
- Good learners work in a cycle. They plan, try, check, adjust, and carry the lesson forward. (Zimmerman)
- Confidence is not evidence. Learners can mistake familiarity for understanding, so the system asks you to retrieve, explain, apply, and verify. (Dunlosky and Rawson)
- Specific plans improve follow-through. Naming when, where, and how you will act is more effective than relying on a general intention. (Gollwitzer and Sheeran)
- Beliefs about ability affect persistence, though mindset effects are generally modest and depend on the student and the setting. Strategy, support, and opportunity still matter. (Yeager et al.)
Much of the research foundation is not new. What is new is bringing it together in a system students can use on the day an assignment is due, with an AI tab already open.
The Book: Think First
The six tools above are single pages taken from a book. Think First is the complete Learning Ownership System, written for college and university students.
The book works at three depths, so it fits the week you are actually having: Quick tools when you are overloaded and need direction in minutes, Core tools when a task really matters, and Deep prompts when you are ready to learn from your own patterns. The system works when you only have five minutes, and it works when you need to plan a major assignment or exam.
A full section of the book covers learning with AI: what to check before you prompt, what to do when a course does not allow AI at all, and how a visible record of your process helps you document and explain your decisions if questions arise. There are also complete tools for assignments and exams, a weekly planning routine, and a recovery plan for a term that has gone sideways.
You do not read Think First from page one. The book opens with a Find Your Problem index: a list of situations (I don’t know where to start. I’m behind. I got feedback I can’t use.) that sends you straight to the tool you need. And the book is not tied to a term date. Start in September, in the middle of November, or the week you decide to rebuild how you study.
